Harmony Grove destructive stifles McGehee

McGEHEE—As Hurricane Delta was coming ashore in South Louisiana the Harmony Grove Hornets faced a destructive storm of their own-the stifling defense of the McGehee Owls-on a rainy and windy night in Southeast Arkansas. The Owls upended the Hornets 28-6 in a key 6AAA match-up of preseason top tier teams.

McGehee took the opening kick and mounted a 65 yard drive that was capped by a 3 yard touchdown run by QB Jordan Owens. The successful PAT gave the home team all the points they would need to win the game with 9:27 to play in the first quarter.

Harmony Grove responded with a scoring drive of their own that saw Mecca Arnold catch a pass and streak 57 yards for a touchdown with 11:05 to go in the second quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed making the score 7-6.

Owls scored a couple of times before the half

The Owls, under the tutelage of Coach Marcus Haddock, scored two touchdowns before the end of the first half. The first came with 6:08 to go in the second period when Marcus Rose, Jr. caught a pass from Owens then ran 33 yards for the score. The PAT was unsuccessful making the score 13-6.

Jody Easter ran for 7 yards to score at the 3:18 mark. The two-point play was successful making the score 21-6.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but McGehee did reach the end zone with 11:53 to go in the game when Easter scored his second touchdown of the night on a 10 yard run. The PAT was good setting the final margin of victory, 28-6.

The Hornets struggled all night on offense. They did not run a play resulting in a first down all night. Most of the game McGehee defenders were in the backfield soon after the snap disrupting Harmony Grove’s rushing and passing attempts.

The loss evens the Coach Ernie Horstcamp’s Hornets’ record at 3-3, 2-1 in 6AAA play. McGehee is now 5-0 on the season and undefeated in conference action.
